Children on the Internet

The Internet provides a virtual world where children can learn interact with friends and play. But just as parents and children should be wary of strangers in the real world, children and parents should be aware of the dangers posed by the same strangers in the online world.

What can parents do to protect children when they are online?

Please visit the Internet Watch Foundations Website to find out how to protect children, when they are connecting to the Internet.
What should children know to keep themselves safe on the Internet?

Parents should teach their children how to surf safely. Tips available on The Internet Watch Foundation website.

Should parents stop children from using the Internet?

The wealth of educational and recreational content available via the Internet makes it a great facility in any home or school. We recommend that parents offer guidance to children to ensure they surf the Internet safely and get the most out of it.
What should children do if someone or something makes them feel uncomfortable on the Internet?

They should tell their parents, carers, teachers or another adult they feel they can trust.

Can software help to prevent children downloading unsuitable material?

Yes it can. The ICRAfilter is just one product which can help to filter unsuitable material. It is FREE to download.

What are Internet filters?

Internet filters, like the ICRAfilter, are software that help to control what a computer terminal downloads from the Internet and are a good compliment to other methods of protecting children on the Internet. They are not a complete solution. Parents should still use the advise the IWF displays on their website and encourage their children to practise SMART surfing.

Who can you trust on the Internet?

The vast majority of Internet users are honest in their intentions. However, when communicating with people on the Internet, we recommend that people practice the SMART surfing tips offered by the IWF.

What is the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF)?

The IWF was launched in September 1996 to combat the problem of illegal material on the Internet, with particular reference to child pornography. It is an independent organisation set up to implement proposals jointly agreed by the Government, the police and two major UK organisations representing Internet service providers - ISPA and LINX.

What is the Home Office Task Force on Child Protection on the Internet?

The Home Office Task Force on Child Protection on the Internet was established following the Internet Crime Forum's report "Chatwise, Streetwise". It is a partnership between Government, industry, law enforcement agencies and children's charities while the Home Office provides the Secretariat. It aims to:

·  make the UK the best and safest place in the world for children to use the Internet

·  to help protect children the world over from abuse fuelled by criminal misuse of new technologies.

Should I be worried about my child coming into contact with paedophiles?

Only a tiny minority of people use the Internet for illegal activity. Following the IWF's advice and getting children to think smart will help them stay safe.

Are chatrooms a threat to children?

The majority of use of Internet chat rooms is for the very legitimate purpose of meeting new people online. They are a fun pastime for many in the online community. However there have been instances of paedophiles using chat rooms to make contact with children, most notably in the one-to-one areas where chat room conversations cannot be monitored.

ISPA supports the Wise Up To The Net campaign in which Home Office Minister Beverley Hughes sent the clear message that, "Paedophiles are dangerous - not Internet chatrooms."
