ISPA calls for Government to prioritise removing barriers to broadband rollout

In our response to the Government Call for Evidence on Extending Local Full Fibre Networks, ISPA sets out its support for the Government’s commitment to assisting ISPs in the UK in the existing strong, market-driven efforts to rollout fibre networks.

We believe that Government should set out mix of measures to support rollout of ultrafast broadband, including demand aggregation, the potential for a voucher scheme, access to public sector networks and, most importantly, minimising barriers to rollout our members face from local authorities, private landlords and other parties.

Digital Economy Bill enters Lords Committee Stage

With the Digital Economy Bill now moving to Committee Stage in the House of Lords, ISPA have been hard at work on the issues that will have the most impact on members.

Key areas we have been working on include online safety, Ofcom Appeals, and the Universal Service Obligation. Secretariat have briefed Government and Opposition Lords and will be continuing to engage with key stakeholders as the Bill progresses, sending through updates on our work.

Yesterday, the Lords had their first day of Committee Stage debate on the Bill, whilst Labour and the Lib Dems pushed for a more ambitious USO, Government remained steadfastly committed to 10Mbps. Whilst Government stated they wanted to support gigabit connectivity, they stated that the market could deliver this, and the USO was instead designed to tackle social and digital exclusion
