ISPA Charity Cup Travels North With Champions PlusNet

£4,000 raised for charity

PlusNet have taken The Internet Industry’s prestigious Charity Cup back to Sheffield after a hard fought battle against reigning champions Claranet.

The ISPA Charity Cup, in association with Rconnection, a division of Register.com, is a five-a-side football tournament for both ISPA members and non-members. Fourteen teams battled it out for the coveted trophy, with all proceeds going to charity.

Plusnet overcame defending champions Claranet in a thrilling final. After a goalless first five minutes Plusnet found the back of the net and despite Claranet’s best efforts managed to keep their 1-0 advantage winning the match and claiming the title.

The event is a great way to bring the Internet industry and businesses together to support charitable causes. This year’s ISPA event raised just under £4,000 for: The British Liver Trust, advocating on behalf of those suffering from liver disease and funding medical research; Net2work, which teaches vocational IT skills in deprived areas and LOHADA, a small, Tanzanian-led, non-governmental organisation serving young children at risk of going to the streets and disadvantaged elderly people in Tanzania.

The tournament serves to encourage cooperation between ISPs to promote self-regulation, competition and development of the Internet through their active membership of ISPA UK, while also offering the UK Internet industry a fun day out.

If you want to take on PlusNet in next year’s tournament, or you want to find out the full range of membership benefits, please contact the ISPA Secretariat.

Avanti Go Into Orbit To Support Business Continuity
New Internet Connection backup service for business

Complete security against internet connectivity failure for UK business is now within easy reach of thousands of busy data oriented businesses thanks to the ingenuity of London based company Avanti Communications.

This is a fantastic opportunity for ISPs to take advantage of Avanti's new developments to offer business customers a satellite Internet connection backup service that will deliver peace of mind to businesses relying on a continuous internet connection.

The new service, for which patents have been filed, enables a seamless connection to a physically separate satellite circuit whenever a terrestrial broadband connection fails. Even with an expensive secondary backup terrestrial connection it can take up to 24 hours to re-propagate IP addresses and allow a business to access the internet or send and receive emails normally - 24 hours that could ruin many organisations.

Avoiding internet downtime is critical for many organisations as businesses become increasingly dependent on a continuous broadband internet connection. Just imagine a busy operation with no email, no blackberry and no remote access to data or mail. A day of downtime can cause days more of business disruption and that is what this service prevents.

Figures from the US Bureau of Labor reveal that the majority of companies suffering major broadband service outages, loss of broadband connection for more than a few days, never resume business or shut down within two years – only six percent survive long-term. The research revealed that the hourly cost of downtime for US companies is $42,000.

The market for Business Internet Continuity continues to grow with regulations for local government meaning that local authorities must have in place contingency plans to make sure services are always available. Directors of companies must at least consider contingency plans as part of their role as directors.

By working with Avanti ISPs can now provide this service to business customers in a competitively priced package that will make sense to any business that has already invested in the cost of an internet circuit.

There is an installation fee to set up a small satellite dish and terminal at the business. After that customers have a standby charge of £50 a month and pay for the connection only when the backup system is in use. The £95 a day charge for emergency satellite broadband connection means it is now viable for more businesses than ever.

Matthew O’Connor, Managing Director of Networks at Avanti communications said: “The technology that allows a seamless transfer to a satellite circuit whilst maintaining all the existing IP addresses is a real first and UK companies can benefit foremost.

“The recent floods across the UK made it impossible for hundreds of businesses to operate and the economy lost millions of pounds. Some people worry about terrorist attacks or acts of God using them as reasons to invest in business continuity. In fact you are more likely to have your internet connection destroyed by something as simple as a road digger cutting through an underground cable than anything else.”

Avanti Communication's groundbreaking business internet continuity package is just one of their satellite services which are set to fall further in price when it becomes the first UK company to launch its own geo-stationary satellite in 2009.

The new satellite will put the UK at the forefront of satellite broadband development offering more bandwidth by using the latest spot beam technology. The satellite will offer beams that are three times more powerful than other European operators and will help transform the way businesses insure themselves from a network failure.

To offer the service to business broadband customers ISPs simply have to allow Avanti engineers two to three hours to add to the routing tables after which Business Internet Continuity can then be supplied to your entire business customer base as a white label service or offered as a stand-alone product by Avanti.

Avanti has a twelve year track record of working closely with the European Space Agency, the UK Government and the European Union on projects that include satellite broadband, disaster management and satellite navigation which make it one of the most innovative and experienced satellite businesses in the industry.

ISPA In The News
The ‘net neutrality debate

This month ISPA were asked to comment on the prospect of a ‘two-tier’ internet where content providers would have to pay a premium to guarantee a speedy web site.

ISPA suggested that increased management of Internet traffic may be inevitable because of technological rather than regulatory limitations.
