ISPs Invited To Filter Their Networks Freely For 12 Months

Brightfilter Parental Solution available free now

News items concerning  Internet access  are rarely out of the media, whether it be paedophile activity, inappropriate content being viewed by children of school age, racist or hate material, bullying, or the fear of malware and other attacks simply as a result of surfing the Internet. Many parents do appear unaware, or feel powerless to deal with these problems despite the fact that there are solutions available that go some way to address these issues; that said where very young children are concerned a degree of adult supervision should always go hand in hand with some other form of control.

Equally it is well recognised that ISP’s are battling hard to win and retain customers in an extremely price driven market, and consumer expectations are increasingly that value added services will be  included with their access provision for no extra monthly charge.

In addition Government is looking very carefully at the role of the Internet vis a vis young children and one of the first things Gordon Brown did as our new Prime Minister was to appoint Dr Tanya Byron to conduct a review of Internet access and gaming and its effect s on young children with a view to determining what steps Government may require or request of the Industry to implement improvements.
Brightfilter, who are specialists in the provision of web content filtering and managed services have decided to pre-empt any Government edicts and take some positive action to assist the Internet Service Provider community.

They have recognised that it is difficult for ISP’s to make investment in this arena so they are offering a facility to UK based ISP’s whereby the ISP during 2008 can offer 12 months free filtering to their consumer subscriber base. The Brightfilter Parental Control solution, using the BECTA accredited SmartFilter database and incorporating the IWF list also uses Trusted Source from Secure Computing to help combat Web 2.0 threats. By locking down the filtering criteria of the Brightiflter solution ISP’s will be able to provide an IWF protected feed to their entire consumer base at no cost.

Brightfilter has significant experience in this arena supporting the web filtering requirements for some 10,000 schools in the UK as well as working closely with many local government authorities, Banks, Insurance companies and NHS Trusts using the Secure Computing SmartFilter database and Trusted Source technologies in conjunction with the power of the WebWasher and IronMail platforms.

There are many different, totally scalable, software only and/or appliance based solutions and services that can be employed dependant on the degree of flexibility and granularity required of the ISP and the offering they wish to promote to their consumer base or business customers.

ISPs called to fight terrorism and file-sharing

This month Gordon Brown suggested that the Home Office will summon ISPs to Westminster for anti-terror discussions.  ISPA responded by stating that

"ISPA has been leading discussions with officials on the enforcement of the Terrorism Act online for the last year and looks forward to hearing further details about this additional dialogue and how ISPA can help inform the debate."

Across the channel French President Nicolas Sarkozy trumpeted a new plan by some of the country's ISPs and its record and film industries to shut off illegal file-sharers' internet access.

He said: "The rights of authors, the preservation of creativity, the recognition of the rights of each artist, of each performer...was an important commitment of my presidential campaign.

ISPA pointed out that “The Department for Business, Employment and Regulatory Reform is aware that we are engaged with the Motion Picture Association of America on file-sharing issues and we welcome contact from other rights holders."
