ISPA hosts the Internet event of the summer
And Welcomes new Council Member

Following the well-attended ISPA AGM and Summer Reception held at the National Liberal Club on July 10th, ISPA is to pleased to welcome new Council member, Trefor Davies from Timico, and welcome back James Blessing from Entanet who has been re-elected.

The summer reception was attended by ISPA members, government and regulatory figures and a variety of other important industry stakeholders. The Liberal Democrat Shadow Spokesperson for Culture, Media and Sport, Don Foster MP, delivered the keynote address and was followed by a presentation from the sponsors, Netclean.

Two bottles of champagne were drawn by way of a card drop with the bottles going - purely coincidently and some might say unfortunately! - to two government officials.

Peer2Peer MOU and Consultation

In the news this month, the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR) announced its consultation on illicit peer2peer filesharing and the Memorandum of Understanding between ISPs and rights holders.

Commenting on the announcement, ISPA welcomed the Government's stated preference for a self-regulatory approach to dealing with online copyright infringement. Many of the principles contained in the MOU were suggested in previous ISPA facilitated discussions. ISPA does however caution that any future negotiations should involve ISPs of all sizes.

ISPA believes that the Internet offers a fantastic opportunities to make more music and film available to consumers and rights holders should continue to embrace the Internet by forming mutually beneficial partnerships between ISPs and rights holders.

Culture, Media & Sport Select Committee Inquiry

ISPA also commented on the publication of the Culture, Media and Sport Select Commmittee inquiry into harmful content on the Internet which ISPA submitted both written and oral evidence to.

ISPA acknowledged the fact that the Committee calls for greater clarity on certain issues and the legal framework, and calls for greater government coordination.  Adding, Internet safety is a shared responsibility involving the Internet industry, the Government, end users and other stakeholders.
