ISPA responds to Counter-Terrorism and Security Bill

Following a wide-ranging speech from the Home Secretary, the Counter-Terrorism and Security Bill was published and is being fast-tracked through parliament. ISPA said that Government needed to do more to consult with industry on IP-matching proposals  but we will work with our members to scrutinise the Bill. The Bill extends the amount of data that law enforcement can access  as CSPs will be required to keep records to help match an IP address and other identifiers to a specific device.

ISPA responds to Intelligence and Security Committee

The Intelligence and Security Committee published their report into the death of Fusilier Lee Rigby in which they criticised social media companies. Responding to the comments, ISPA argued it is for the intelligence agencies and not service providers to identify potential subjects, and “when identified by the authorities CSPs can and do assist in providing communications data under a clear legal process”. ISPA also published a blog post to counter similar comments made by the new head of GCHQ who said the internet was ‘the command and control network of choice for terrorists’. ISPA made the point that the internet helped establish a counter-narrative and it is unhelpful to mis-characterise the web in such a way.
