ISPA Supports Worldwide Sweep On Spam

Wednesday, 16 March 2005

In February 2005, the Internet Services Providers’ Association (ISPA) supported the World’s first ever coordinated, global sweep against spam organised by The International Consumer Protection and Enforcement Network (ICPEN).

As a signatory of The London Action Plan (LAP), ISPA encouraged its members to participate in the 2005 Sweep on spam.

The LAP is an international plan of action by government agencies and private sector organisations to communicate and cooperate on tackling spam and became involved in the Sweep for the first time in 2005.

The Sweep involved over 70 law-enforcement agencies across 26 countries and analysed a sample of 138,904 spam emails from trap email accounts. Analysis produced a snapshot of spam emails by category, at the time of the Sweep. Emails promoting software and computer equipment, adult pharmaceutical products and adult content were found to be of particular prominence. At this stage Government agencies have flagged a total of 3,241 emails for further investigation in various countries.

Many UK ISPs currently offer consumers spam-filtering tools and advice about limiting and reporting spam.

Richard Sharpe, Managing Director of altoHiway and member of the ISPA Council said: ISPA is pleased to be involved with the most comprehensive Internet sweep carried out to date. ISPA’s involvement reflects a longstanding opposition to the sending of emails without due regard for applicable law or in contravention of a service provider’s terms and conditions.

"Spam saps ISPs’ valuable bandwidth, can compromise the integrity of a network and affects the performance of mail servers. Combating spam costs ISPs and their customers very significant amounts of time and money.”
