The Internet Services Providers’ Association (ISPA UK) - the UK’s leading Internet trade association - held the second annual ISP football tournament on Thursday 26th October at Wembley, in association with Rconnection, a division of Register.com

Fourteen teams including AOL, Brightview and Zen battled it out for the coveted trophy. The final saw Claranet narrowly defeat defending champions AOL to take the title.

ISPA's second annual charity football tournament

The event is a great way to bring Internet businesses together to support charitable causes. This year’s ISPA event raised just under £4,000 for: The British Liver Trust, which advocates on behalf of those suffering from liver disease and funds medical research; and Net2work, which teaches vocational IT skills in deprived areas.

The tournament serves to encourage cooperation between ISPs to promote self-regulation, competition and development of the Internet through their active membership of ISPA UK, while also offering the UK Internet industry a fun day out.

Jessica Hendrie-Liaño, Chair of ISPA Council said, “The ISPA Charity Cup, in association with Rconnection, is a great way for the ‘net industry to get together and support such deserving charities. The tournament has firmly established itself alongside The ISPAs – the UK Internet Industry Awards, as a key date in the Industry’s diary.

"The great support for the event demonstrates the ongoing commitment of the Internet community to work together to promote accessibility to the ‘net.”

The 14 participating teams were split into three groups, with the top placed teams progressing to a knock-out phase. The final saw defending champions AOL narrowly defeated by Claranet in a match decided by sudden death penalties.

The plate competition was won by charity, Net2work.

“We are pleased to continue our support for the Charity Cup in its second year,” said Peadar O'Baoighill, UK Manager of Rconnection. “It is important for us at Rconnection to be part of such a fun event which also raises money for two great causes. We look forward to continuing our close work with ISPA and our colleagues in the Internet industry.”
