The Internet Services Providers' Association

The UK's Leading Trade Association for Providers of Internet Services

The Internet Services Providers' Association (ISPA) was established in 1995 as a trade association to represent Internet Services Providers (ISPs) in the UK. ISPA promotes competition, self-regulation and the development of the Internet industry.

As a trade association, membership is voluntary but the ISPs who choose to become members of ISPA agree to abide by the ISPA Code of Practice which addresses issues such as service quality and the issue of illegal material on the Internet. ISPA members' commitment to the Code means that increasingly consumers view the ISPA logo as a mark of quality.

Policies are agreed by the ISPA Council, a body of nine people selected from and representing the various interests of the membership. The Council is served by a secretariat.

Nicholas Lansman, Secretary General of ISPA said, "ISPA's main activity is in making representations on behalf of the industry to Government bodies, such as the Home Office, the UK Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform and Ofcom. Government and political representatives often approach ISPA for its knowledge and expertise in the industry and issues relating to the Internet more generally."

Over 200 companies involved in the provision of Internet services in the UK are members of ISPA UK and benefit from the meetings, information, advice and intelligence ISPA provides on national, European and international policy developments and industry activity.

The ISPA Legal Forum meets four times a year allowing ISPA members to consult solicitors from the UK's top multimedia law firms. Internet lawyers also gain an insight into the practical operation of the Internet Industry.

ISPA was instrumental in establishing EuroISPA, a European federation of Internet Services Providers Associations. EuroISPA voices ISPs concerns to politicians and officials at European Union level and influences EU Internet policies.
