The Internet Services Providers’ Association Kicks Off Annual Charity Cup

Thursday 10th November, 2005

Register.com Sponsorship Helps Football Tournament Raise £5250 for charities across the UK

The Internet Services Providers’ Association (ISPA UK) - the UK’s leading Internet trade association - with sole sponsors Register.com held the first ISP football tournament on 9th November in Wembley. This 5-a-side charity football event attracted 21 teams from 20 companies with the ISPA Charity Cup champions coming from AOL.

While the goal of the event is to bring businesses together to support charitable causes, it also presents an opportunity to promote cooperation between ISPs to help with self-regulation, competition and development of the Internet through their active membership with the ISPA… as well as to bring some fun to members of the UK Internet industry.

Beneficiaries of this year’s ISPA event included: Childnet International (www.childnet-int.org), a non-profit organisation working to make the Internet a safe place for children; The British Liver Trust (www.britishlivertrust.org.uk), which advocates on behalf of those suffering from liver disease and funds medical research on the causes and treatments for the disease; and Computer Aid International (www.computeraid.org), the world’s largest non-profit supplier of computers to developing countries. Each of the charities will share in the £5250 raised through the event.

Jessica Hendrie-Liaño, Chair of ISPA Council said, “The ISPA Charity Cup in association with Register.com is a great way to support three such deserving charities. The support for the event is testimony to the commitment of the ‘net industry in making the Internet a safer place for children and more accessible for all.

The inaugural Charity Cup is another fun event for ISPA members in the run-up to The 2006 ISPAs – the 8th Annual UK Internet Industry Awards - in February 2006.”

Participating teams included: Register.com, Wanadoo, Ofcom, AOL and Yahoo! among others. Each of the 21 participating teams were split into groups. The top two winners of each group were then sent to a knock-out phase which resulted in a narrow 1-0 win for the AOL team in the final. The trophy was presented to the winners by Jacqui Oatley of BBC Radio Five Live.

“While the participants in the Charity Cup are, for a day, both competitors in business and competitors on the pitch, in the end, we all have great fun in the name of a great cause,” said Justin Hartland of Register.com. “It is important for us at Register.com to be part of this particular event for both the charity and collaboration with our colleagues in the industry.”
