The UK’s connectivity story continues to be a glowing success!
Ofcom’s latest Connected Nations update shows just how far the UK has come on digital infrastructure. Full fibre is now available to 24.9 million homes, 82% of the UK’s 30.5 million residential premises, with 1.2 million additional homes gaining access in the six months to January 2026 alone.
This is a huge achievement and a real vote of confidence in the UK. It reflects sustained investment from across the telecoms sector and a strong commitment to delivering the Government’s full fibre and gigabit targets.
What is really encouraging is the forward view. Ofcom’s analysis suggests that, if current momentum continues, full fibre could reach 28.1 million homes, 92% of all residential properties, by the end of 2028.
By January 2029, gigabit-capable coverage in urban areas is expected to increase from 24.2 million homes, 93%, to 25.3 million, 97%, while in rural areas it could grow from 2.9 million homes, 66%, to 3.7 million, 86%. That is a step change in the quality and consistency of connectivity across the country.
However, in order to unlock this potential, the telecoms sector will need continued support to overcome barriers to rollout, a policy and market environment that favours long-term investment, and regulatory cohesion so that government, regulators and industry are all aligned behind the same long-term goals.
If we get that right, the UK is on track to be one of the world’s leading full fibre and gigabit nations, with all the economic and social benefits that follow.
