National Security a focus for the new Cyber Security working group

A new working group has been established in the Cyber Subgroup to directly tackle the challenges of the upcoming Telecoms Security Requirements and the ongoing debate around High Risk Vendors. Given the high profile nature of the debate, the group has been hard at work with two meetings this month, and ramped up engagement with DCMS. The working group will continue to track developments ahead of the Telecoms Security legislation expected later this year.

New Infrastructure working group sets sights on speeding up rollout

The Broadband Subgroup has also established two working groups on both infrastructure and consumer issues to drive policy work in these areas. The Infrastructure group had their first meeting this month to discuss a submission to the Digital Minister Matt Warman on how Government can best accelerate broadband rollout. They also touched on new Access to Infrastructure Regulations and the Migration Advisory Committee’s Shortage Occupation List.

We’re making progress towards to our FTTP target to reach 20m premises by mid-to-late 2020s. We’ve also hired over 3,000 trainee engineers this past financial year to help us build that network and deliver better service across the country. For more information, visit www.openreach.co.uk or follow us on Twitter and Facebook.

ORIGIN BROADBAND PARTNERS WITH NETGEM TO LAUNCH ORIGIN TV – A COMPETITIVE ALTERNATIVE TO TRADITIONAL PAY TV

Origin TV promises customers entertainment upgraded with thousands of movies and TV shows, 120+ channels, all the big names in catch up TV and exclusive sports from around the world.

The service will be available from just £12.99 a month (when purchased with any Origin broadband contract).

Origin broadband and Netgem have joined forces to offer Origin TV, a new multiscreen service. The new product is designed to complement Origin Broadband’s ‘customer first’ model – offering a superb entertainment experience at a great price and as a genuine alternative to the traditional expensive broadband TV offerings.

Origin TV combines a wealth of free live and On-demand content from public broadcasters, YouTube and YouTube Kids, genre based “go to” channels, along with premium sport content through Premier Sports, with access to Spanish and Italian top football matches exclusively from LaLiga and the Serie A.

No less than 150 games will broadcast live in HD and be included in the bundle price in the coming weeks as LaLiga, Serie A and the UK Premier League resume. Origin is an award winning network operator who has grown rapidly since launching in 2011. Origin plans for further product and customer growth throughout 2021 with Origin TV being a key part of the growth strategy, offering customers more choice, better value and an upgraded service.

Netgem TV, whose service was named ‘Most Advanced TV service’ at the 2019 Video Tech Awards, and who offers ‘the best 2020 Freeview Play set-top box in the UK’ as awarded by Expert Review, was selected as the perfect partner to deliver Origin’s ambitious plans.

“Origin has enjoyed double-digit growth in a highly competitive marketplace, and the low-cost yet high-quality and flexible television service provided by Netgem was the perfect tool to continue to drive that growth forwards,” comments Oliver Bryssau, CEO, Origin Broadband. “Netgem allows us to provide a genuine value broadband and video package alternative to the £50/m and upwards routinely charged by our competitors, and has allowed us to do so quickly and with very little capital exposure.”

The Netgem TV service is designed for maximum consumer convenience, acting as a ‘one stop shop’ for all their video content needs, whether that is free-to-air television, YouTube, or any one of the app-based premium services that can be accessed on a convenient and flexible month-to-month basis. As such it is a perfect fit for the agile altnets that are flourishing in the UK and Ireland and transforming the landscape of ultra-fast broadband provision.

“There was no better partner than Origin Broadband to introduce the next evolution of our TV service in the UK, offering greater choice at better value to the consumer and a fast launching solution to ISPs looking to add video to their services and expand their reach,” says Sylvain Thevenot, Chief Commercial and Customer Officer, Netgem TV. “The altnets are seeing great success in the currently challenging economy and we believe that adding flexible, high quality and value-conscious video services to their offering, as Origin Broadband has just done, will help continue to drive their growth forward and increase customer loyalty.”

When talking about wavelength division multiplexing you should also remember that it refers to connections between large data centres. Taking a closer look at the connections, you can notice that the majority of them use the same paths, and what’s more, they rely on point-to-point architecture. So, with that in mind, should you use the same technology as in telecommunication connections when building such systems? And will the increasing demand for broadband between data centres force you to rely on coherent solutions?
