Baroness Thornton hosts ISPA in Parliament on Online Safety

ISPA’s liability subgroup has been busy engaging with Parliament, Government and regulators on the topic of online harms, participating in a recent DCMS roundtable on the White Paper and meetings with key stakeholders. ISPA also hosted a Parliamentary lunch on the topic of online harms earlier this month which was well attended by Parliamentarians and had good representation from the relevant select committees. Several important issues were raised during the lunch, ranging from cross-border enforcement issues in online safety to the challenges posed by DNS-over-HTTPS (DoH).

Upgrading the UK to faster and more reliable broadband connections

At Openreach, we’re determined to be the UK’s full fibre broadband provider and we want to play a leading role in helping the Government to achieve its target of a fully fibred UK by 2033.

The last 12 months have seen us double our full fibre footprint to 1.2 million homes and businesses and undertake the largest recruitment drive in our history – hiring 3,000 trainee engineers.

Our target is to reach four million premises by the end of March 2021, and 15 million by the mid 2020’s if we can get the right conditions to invest.

We’ve spent the last few months talking to our Communications Providers (CPs), working out how we can best support their customers in the big upgrade process to full fibre - suggesting Salisbury in Wiltshire, and Mildenhall in Suffolk as trial locations for our national upgrade programme.

These ‘testbeds’ will give Openreach, CPs and special service providers that rely on our network the chance to test the new technology and work out how we can upgrade people safely and smoothly – moving them from existing analogue and copper technologies to faster, more reliable, fibre broadband.

ISPA in the Press

June was exceptionally busy for our press office, we commented on Boris Johnson's full fibre roll out plans on BBC News, Broadband Deals, Telecompaper and Silicon; gave quote to Mirror for their story about Which? report on broadband customer loyalty prices; and The Telegraph and Sky News carried our views in their stories about GCHQ's attack on new privacy feature of some search engines that could undermine the work of authorities who try to prevent spread of child abuse images.
