CityFibre: The second largest FTTP network in the UK

Last month CityFibre picked up the FTTH Operator Award at the FTTH Europe Annual Conference 2022. This accolade is given, not only based on the size of the network and investment made but also on factors such as the economic, political and competitive environment for driving FTTH roll-out.

May also saw CityFibre confirmed as the second-largest full fibre network in the UK.  With over 1.4m premises now ready for service, CityFibre is well on its way to reaching its target of 8m premises by 2025.

DDoS Protection Partner

Defending ISP networks against DDoS threats

As investments in ISP networks continue to grow, it is vital to proactively protect and defend the physical, optical, and logical networking asset value chain that delivers the services consumed by providers’ customers. In the logical IP networking domain, Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) is a critical risk factor to service level assurance and asset value protection. Corero will share its experience delivering solutions to defend ISP networks against DDoS threats.

5G Crosshaul - Meeting Network Demands with Open Networking

5G crosshaul is radically different from the common 4G mobile backhaul. New requirements include lower latency, higher data rates, hard isolation of network slices, and dynamic connectivity for on-demand services encompassing multiple physical and virtual components at the RAN. The present infrastructure is not fit for purpose and Edgecore Networks is leading the way in this network transformation.

Our Senior Systems Engineer, Barry McGinley, sat down with Edgecore's VP of Product Management, Nanda Ravindran, to discuss why service providers should consider 5G backhaul/x-haul network deployments, and what role is there for open networking.

What comes after Wi-Fi 6 & 6E? Obviously Wi-Fi 7!

The first version of Wi-Fi was released in 1997 and from then we’ve moved from Wi-Fi 4 to where we are now with the Wi-Fi 6/6E standard with a speed over 11 Gbps which is proving to be popular in the gaming community.

Wi-Fi 7 is in the early stages of being launched into the ecosystem and will be an upgrade in almost every aspect, making WLAN throughput almost 5× faster than Wi-Fi 6. To create a more connected world, the protocol defines modifications to both the physical layer (PHY) and MAC layer.

Moreover Wi-Fi 7 innovatively puts forward the 320Mhz bandwidth mode in the 6GHz band and it has double the throughput compared with the 160 MHz of Wi-Fi 6. It also enhances the modulation order from 1024- QAM to 4096 -QAM where each modulation can carry 12 bits of data. In short Wi-Fi 7 can offer way more flexibility, more speed & capacity. Openreach’s Digital Services test lab

Our test lab is open for business so that special services providers and vendors can test their equipment in a multi-CP All IP environment. We currently have six Communications Providers with active circuits in the lab offering GEA-FTTP, SOGEA, and SOGfast services. We’ve already had many organisations test from numerous industries: Emergency lift lines, Alarms, Telecare, Water, and Finance (point of sale machines).

Our diary for 2022 is starting to fill up, and would encourage all special services providers who’ve not tested their equipment to get in touch to make a booking at: www.openreach.com/upgrading-the-UK-to-digital-phone-lines/industry/digital-services-test-lab

Special service devices connected to an All IP network

Testing at the Digital Services lab by third parties has confirmed that devices using Voice Band Data e.g. DTMF for end to end signalling that connects to an Analogue Telephony Adapter (ATA) on a CP router do not function consistently on all CPs’ products. In contrast, similar testing on IP enabled devices connected to CPs’ routers has proven 100 per cent successful. Special service devices by their nature need to operate when they’re required, often in an emergency situation and accordingly, it is very important that All IP enabled equipment’s are developed, tested and proven to operate on the digital network.
