ISPA Policy Update

May policy update

Despite concluding a season of consultation responses in March, with local elections taking place tomorrow and a General Election on the horizon, the policy team has had a dynamic month of engaging with a range of sectoral issues.

ISPA attended a roundtable hosted by DSIT Minister for Data and Digital Infrastructure, Julia Lopez, to discuss the broadband sector’s response to recent complaints — in and out of Westminster — regarding telecoms pole siting. Further industry work will be taken forward by industry trade associations.

  • ISPA is still welcoming data from members — such as complaints figures, cost of poles compared to underground infrastructure, etc.

In addition, the team has been engaging with Defra officials and members on potentially responding to the fourth round of the Adaptation Reporting Power, in which infrastructure organisations and sector groups are invited to report on how they manage resilience in the face of a changing climate. These conversations are ongoing, so please reach out if you have any questions!

Our policy working group met this month and discuss these and other issues. We expect these issues to continue throughout the spring and into the summer, so keep an eye out for updates — in addition to other live areas such as parental controls, smart data open communications, and resilience.

As always, if you have any questions or would like to get more involved with policy issues, please don’t hesitate to reach out and contact us at policy@ispa.org.uk.

ISPA speaks at ConnectedNorth

The ISPA team was pleased to engage in some crucial discussions at #ConnectedNorth.

Head of Public Affairs, Andrew Kernahan, led the discussion on the ongoing regulatory environment as we head towards Ofcom's next market review, joined by Brian Potterill (Ofcom), Andy Wileman (Virgin Media O2), James Tickel (Openreach) and Alex Blowers (CityFibre). The conversation touched on several key issues including barriers and saw the panel convey their perspectives on what should or shouldn't be inlcluded in the review.Joining the key panel on consumer adoption and customer strategy, Krystian Heald shared his insights alongside Jessica Ellis (UKTIN), Eoin Heaney (Calix), Lee Spicer (ACOME), David Mitchell (Hull Fibre Ltd) and moderator Andrew Daly (Analysys Mason). What was clear, is that take-up of new fibre services is crucial to not only sustain the market but to also drive the UK digital legacy forward and should be seen as a priority.
