Lively debate on fibre take up and affordability at ISPA Conference

ISPA conference brought our event schedule to the North...Where over 65 senior leaders from across industry, government, local authorities and charity foundations came together to discuss some of the most crucial conversations around connectivity in the UK.Of particular note was the conversation around driving take-up of gigabit networks through public awareness messaging and a rather dynamic discussion on affordability, which helped establish what effective support for those needing help to get digitally connected looks like.

We also got to hear some insights from the UKs rural connectivity champion, Simon Fell MP.

A huge thanks to all attendees for joining us, TalkTalk for hosting and our line-up of speakers who provided a lively and engaging discussion: Steven Leighton, Simon Fell, Lucy Thomas, Alex Blowers, Giorgio Iovino, Andrew Kernahan, Katie Crellin (Rawlinson), James Barford, Phil Swan, Helen Burrows and Cristina Luna-Esteban!

ISPA Policy

Busy month for the ISPA policy team

Ofcom has launched a new consultation, which will examine what internet distribution will mean over the long term for TV platforms, and how broadband networks are evolving to meet and be resilient to this new demand.

The Department for Business and Trade (DBT) published a new call for evidence which aims to understand what works well and what could be improved in how regulators operate to deliver for the sectors they serve.

The Department for Science, Innovation and Technology has also launched two ‘Digital Connectivity’ consultations to improve broadband access. The first consists of a review of the policy underpinning the Broadband Universal Service Obligation (USO), which came into effect in March 2020, and is seeking views on what the minimum standard of the USO should be and whether the original policy objectives remain compatible with today’s changing digital market.

The second relates to improving broadband for Very Hard to Reach premises, those that are unlikely to receive a gigabit-capable connection via either a commercial or government funded intervention. This will establish the case for government support and intervention, why VHTR places require a different approach to Project Gigabit and how the policy interacts with the broadband USO.

ISPA will be responding to all of these consultations.

LSBUD Members’ Assets Better Protected than Ever Before

Just recently the number of registered LSBUD Users hit a very significant milestone. 250,000 Users now have an active LSBUD account. The LSBUD team works very hard to attract new users, maintaining a sharp focus on attracting those Users who are most likely to damage assets. These include farmers, fencers, building contractors and the general public.

LSBUD’s Members (the asset owners) have never had their assets so well protected, with both User and search numbers (4 million searches will be made this year) at record levels.
