ISPA Holds its sixth Annual Conference -

ISPA held a successful annual conference on Wednesday with a good turnout, despite the weather. With top speakers including Chi Onwurah MP, Shadow Minister for Business, Innovation and Skills and Simon Towler, Head of Broadband Policy and Programmes at BIS.

Ms Onwurah delivered the keynote and spoke about the Digital Economy Act and her thoughts on the industry as a new MP with a technology background. She also spoke about broadband delivery and Next Generation Access.

Simon Towler talked about Broadband Delivery UK and the Government's commitment for 2Mbps to every household by 2015. He also confirmed that the broadband strategy document would be published in the next few days.

The first panel session included speakers Andrew Heaney from TalkTalk and Geoff Taylor from the BPI, who debated the effects of the initial obligations code and the judicial review on the initial obligations code. The following Cloud session included Will Page from PRS for Music and Claranet MD Michel Robert who debated cloud content, infrastructure and provision.

Following an entertaining presentation from Nominet in the afternoon on DNSSEC, Simon Milner from BT, David Lewis from Rutland Telecom and others debated future broadband delivery and Government investment in the area.

ISPA would like to thank everyone for battling through the weather conditions to take part and Bird & Bird for hosting for the second year running. A big thank you to all the speakers as well as Nominet, Mozy by EMC and Detica for making the event possible through their sponsorship.

The ISP role in DNSSEC

DNSSEC is a security extension to the domain name system. There is potential for DNS servers to be compromised using a tactic known as ‘cache poisoning’, leading to real domain names being linked to false IP addresses hosting malicious sites. DNSSEC confirms the authenticity of DNS data. If a query is sent to a DNS server, the sender needs to be sure that the response is genuine. This is achieved by DNSSEC using cryptographic signatures to authenticate the transactions between the servers that resolve domain names. This prevents anyone from spoofing DNS traffic between computers causing innocent users to be redirected to fake sites.

The implementation of DNSSEC into the root of the Internet has taken place quietly and successfully, and Nominet will sign .co.uk with DNSSEC in March 2011. The challenge now is to push the adoption of this technology across UK internet infrastructure. ISPs have a vital role in this and we are keen to have all ISPs on board.
