Queen’s Speech highlights Government’s digital agenda

Following the election, the Government used the Queen’s Speech to reemphasise their commitment to the £5bn of funding for the roll out of gigabit-capable connections. They further reintroduced the Telecoms Infrastructure (Leasehold Property) Bill which seeks to speed up the process through which operators can obtain a wayleave in the case of an absentee landlord. The Government will also once again seek to mandate that all new build developments are able to support gigabit-capable connections. On online safety, the Government committed to bringing forward legislation around online harms. ISPA will be working closely with members as the new Government takes forward its agenda.

DNS-over-HTTPS Policy Conference

ISPA’s DNS-over-HTTPS Policy Conference was held in early December and provided ISPA members, charities and technology businesses with a chance to hear from the key participants in the ongoing debate around the implementation of DoH and the potential impact on telecommunications networks and users. Highlights included presentations from Eric Rescorla (CTO at Mozilla), Martin J. Levy (Distinguished Engineer at Cloudflare) and Paul Vixie (CEO at Farsight Security). We also had contributions from Google, ETNO, Sky and Article 19 while BT, Open-Xchange and 419 Consulting supported us with the organisation of the event. ISPA will continue to follow the developments around DoH and keep members up to date.

ISPA responds to cyber incentives consultation

The Cyber Security subgroup responded to the DCMS’s call for evidence on their plans to review incentives and regulation around cyber security. The full response can be found here, which targets the assumption that cyber security is not already a key priority for many businesses.

Broadband subgroup ready to shape policy in 2020

The broadband subgroup will meet this month to kick off another year set to be busy with policy and regulatory changes in the pipeline. Ofcom published their consultation on the European Electronic Communications Code just before Christmas which must be fully transposed by the end of the year. Alongside this, the subgroup will discuss the upcoming wayleaves legislation and still await a specific consultation from Ofcom on gaining provider-led switching processes.

Take 5 minutes to complete a survey on ISP entertainment services

ISPA is seeking members’ views on ISP entertainment services to help inform a new ISPA workstream.

Entertainment has the potential to be key driver for faster speeds so together with our partner, netgem.tv, who currently work with several members, we have decided to explore some of the challenges and the possible solutions around providing top-level entertainment services to your customers.

It would be much appreciated if you took a moment to fill in a short survey by clicking here. It is only 9 questions and is to better understand how you use entertainment as part of your customer offering or any barriers to doing so.

Drawing on the survey’s results, we will co-host a workshop in early 2020 with netgem.tv to discuss some of the challenges and opportunities identified, hear from expert speakers in the content space and assess the potential of joining forces to work with content partners.
