ISPA POLICY UPDATE

All eyes on cyber

This month ISPA engaged with several Government consultations on cyber policy, including the Home Office call for views on reforming the Computer Misuse Act which we submitted evidence to. ISPA is now working with members to respond to a DCMS call for views on cyber security in supply chains and managed service providers. The Telecoms Security Bill continued its journey through the House of Lords with Peers participating in the second reading earlier this week.  ISPA is working with DCMS to ensure members are well informed and prepared for the new security framework.

ISPA engages on Online Safety Bill

ISPA met with members to discuss the Draft Online Safety Bill including the possible impact on members and next steps. The team have engaged with a number of stakeholders and will continue to engage with Government on the Bill.

ISPA continues raising awareness of barriers to broadband

This month was another busy month for broadband policy in particular Electronic Communications Code (ECC) reform and barriers to broadband. The ISPA secretariat gave evidence on rural broadband and the barriers faced to the APPG on Rural Business for their enquiry into rural productivity. ISPA have submitted further evidence on the barriers to broadband rollout to the inquiry. The secretariat also met with MPs and their offices to raise awareness of the importance of ECC reform and to gather support for reform in the new Product Security and Telecommunications Bill when it returns to Parliament. The GigaTAG report was published at the start of June, the report had three main recommendations on how to encourage take up of gigabit-capable broadband including for Ofcom to look at introducing a common set of terminology and use cases as well as local and national campaigns. The Secretariat have met with Ofcom to discuss their initial thoughts on terminology as well as their plans for engagement with firms. The secretariat will continue to follow this work closely as Ofcom begins to hold workshops.

The summer of sports gets even better!

England qualifying for the quarter-finals is not the only good news this week... for our ISP partners that is!

Netgem customers with their TV package from selected Internet Service Providers including co-branded Origin TV and Community Fibre TV customers are now set to enjoy a full ’Summer of Sport’ running from June after the recent partnerships with BT Sport and Fuel TV, and Netgem will add over 15 sports channels to their line up from this month at no extra cost to the viewers or the ISPs.

This extra differentiator versus traditional Pay TV services (where nothing gets ever added for free!) is brought through an European wide partnership with new free, ad-supported sport TV specialist, SportsTribal TV. These high quality 24/7 linear sports streaming TV channels will entertain a wide and diverse range of fans who love sports such as; eSports, lacrosse, extreme, action and adventure sports, MMA, billiards, pool and snooker TV, live U.S collegial games, women's football, Poker, Health and real-time fitness classes, electric motorsports, equestrian sports, skiing and snowboarding and many more all powered by SportsTribal TV.

This partnership continues to build on the momentum of Netgem TV in the UK & Ireland - having added more than 30 channels since the start of 2021 and  launched  a series of Free and great value On-Demand services such as Filmzie, W4Free, or Acorn TV. . Shan Eisenberg, Chief Commercial Officer at Netgem UK commented: “Adding the best Free Ad Supported Streaming TV (FAST) players makes a lot of sense to boost the value of our TV packages and in turn the value of Fibre & TV bundles for our ISP partners in the UK and Ireland - that’s even more the case for Sports which as a category has suffered from the pandemic in the past year and sports fans are craving for a big comeback in stadiums as well as on TV.”

Peter Rampling, CCO of Community Fibre added: “Only a few weeks after adding the premium add-on of BT Sport available with a monthly subscription at £25/month, we are delighted to reinforce the Community Fibre TV value proposition with high quality free sports channels. Combined with the power of 100% full fibre broadband, sports fans will really feel like they are in the middle of all the action this summer.”

It’s not too late to tie-in with the restart of the Premier League in August, streaming in 4K on your beautiful Ultrafast network – right in time for the Broadband switchers seasonal peak. Simply get in touch at enquiries@netgem.co.uk

Which devices show increasing needs for cyber-protection?

In the home-working era, consumers are more reliant on rock-solid cyber-security than ever. However, Plume's latest data insights suggest that surprisingly it’s not the device types more strongly associated with productivity, such as computers and smartphones, that have the most rapidly increasing cyber-protection needs.

Data from the Plume Cloud shows that in the U.S., entertainment devices, and specifically Smart TVs, have seen the highest percentage growth in cyber-threats blocked—238% and 433% respectively. Meanwhile, Europe tops the geo chart with 658 threats blocked on average per household in May 2021.
