Steps to Active Cyber Defence

A 'one year on' review of Active Cyber Defence (ACD) was published this month by the National Cyber Security Centre. The ACD aims at 'making the UK an unattractive target to cyber criminals and some states' through a more proactive, interventionist approach to cyber security to address common concerns around vulnerabilities The NCSC's own review has shown a positive effect from its multiple programmes, with plans to scale it up in the coming year to more public services where appropriate.

ISPA is mentioned as a key partner in the report and was asked to consider a number of measures for implementation. We have been working with members to promote and review the programme. Our press response in support can be found here.

Banquet at Parliament on Broadband Barriers

ISPA heads to Parliament on the 2nd of May to bring together industry and parliamentarians in the joint-pursuit of busting broadband barriers, including addressing multiple issues with wayleaves and infrastructure access. The event promises to be hugely popular, with places strictly limited. We recommend booking early to avoid disappointment.

The night will include a three-course dinner in the House of Commons, with opportunities to hear from a diverse range of people from industry and politics. There will be plenty of opportunities to network and take in the magnificent surroundings of the historic venue. ISPA members can email admin@ispa.org.uk for more information on how to book their tickets.

Govt updates its approach to NIS implementation

The government has set out new regulations aimed at protecting essential services from cyber security measures. The regulations include fines on companies that do not have effective cyber security measures, with guidance provided here. ISPA contributed to the consultation here and will be working with ISPs and the regulator going forward.

Busy regulatory month

ISPA held constructive meetings with DCMS, Ofcom and the BBFC this month, leading on important issues relating to the Universal Service Obligation, Barrier Busting, age verification and more besides. We are encouraged by the efforts made by each body to work with members across these important areas.

Ofcom’s Annual Plan reviewed

Ofcom's annual plan has been published, with ISPA largely supportive of the main goals set out in the plan. We continued to offer our support, whilst giving a frank assessment of a number of areas that needed improvement. The broadband speed code of practice was deemed to not give due consideration to smaller providers and ISPA recommended a reassessment given the relative strain on resources compared to larger providers.

With GDPR, NIS and the Digital Economy Act all taking centre stage in 2018, we asked Ofcom to launch a reduced number of consultations given pressures placed on members resources. We encourage active participation between industry and the regulator, but remain mindful of a balance that must ensue to allow businesses to operate and innovate effectively. The full response can be found here.
