ISPA refreshes website

We are pleased to unveil our new-look, refreshed website this month.
As part of our 25th anniversary plans, the ISPA site has been updated and enhanced with a fresh look and additional member-only content and resources. The new layout is designed to help consumers and members to access information and showcase our work, and that of our members and partners

Covid 19: ISPA members keeping Britain connected

ISPA has continued to work closely with its members in response to Covid-19.

Weekly member calls have provided an opportunity to update on key developments, share experiences and best practice, identify issues and collate feedback to policymakers. Some of the key areas we have been working with members on include network performance, impact on rollout, supporting customers, how Government can help our sector and protecting members’ staff who are keeping Britain connected. Our Covid-19 hub continues to act as a central resource for members.

It is clear from our regular discussions with members that ISPs are working to hard to ensure customers remain connected at this crucial time. From managing demands in the network to fixing issues as they arise, the industry is on the frontline of enabling customers to stay connected with friends and family and continue working from home at this important time.

To highlight members’ commitment to keeping Britain connected, we have spoken to a range of companies and individuals and are pleased to be able to share their stories. The stories featured include engineers on the ground, customer service advisers helping customers through this period and technical support teams helping keep networks perform well.

ISPA regulatory and policy work

With much of the policy focus shifted to Covid-19 related issues, ongoing regulatory and policy work has been delayed. Ofcom published an updated Annual Plan of Work which details the shifted deadlines for the many consultations and statements expected over the next financial year. With the implementation of the EECC due by the end of December, a statement is expected from Government over the summer, with the switching processes unlikely to be finalised until the new year.

Netgem TV is the cost effective TV service that allows Rural and Full Fibre Internet Service Providers to showcase their Broadband services for the streaming generation. Salumanus’ successful project delivered remotely during the pandemic of COVID-19

Difficult times require creative solutions and engagement from both sides - from the solution provider and the client.

Is it possible to run a wavelength division multiplexing system remotely?

It was checked out by one of our clients who completed the purchasing process last March and chose Salumanus’s offer for the implementation of encrypted transmission between two data centres. It could have been quite an ordinary deployment, if it hadn’t been for the fact that the system had to be delivered and installed in 4 weeks and during the epidemic period when there are a number of restrictions.

What were the bank’s requirements about the system?

The system is to work on two independent optical paths with several transmissions of 10GbE, 40GbE as well as 16G Fibre Channel on each path. In addition, all transmissions had to be encrypted with respect to the sensitivity of the transmitted data and simultaneously, the delay generated by the devices had to be reduced to minimum.

How to go, when you’re not allowed to go?

It turned out that the deadlines could not be moved and the system had to be deployed in March. Due to the fact that non-standard situations require non-standard solutions, together with the client we agreed to do remote installation, however unbelievable it sounds. At the beginning, we provided remote training with the focus on operation, configuration and monitoring of our devices’ parameters. Then, pre-configuration, detailed instruction... and with a little remote help, our client deployed the system himself!

At Salumanus, we work intermittently supporting our partners and helping them build leading telecommunication networks.
