Security Minister to give keynote at ISPA Conference
21 October 2013 – James Brokenshire MP, Minister for Crime and Security, will outline the future security challenges facing the internet industry at the 8th ISPA Conference on November 27.
The ISPA Conference has become a key event for the UK internet sector and the 2013 conference is entitled: “The Internet Industry: What Lies Ahead?. As well as the Ministerial keynote speech, there are four panels, focusing on new innovations, broadband post 2015, what an ‘ISP’ will look like in 10 years’ time and the role of internet companies in moderating the internet.
Broadband has been a major political issue in the last couple of years. With the election in 2015 and a disputed roll out of superfast, we ask examine what government can do to get UK fully online, and how this will be funded. With critics of the current process and several schemes still under way, what lessons can be learnt to improve connectivity schemes after the next election?
Our fourth panel ‘Dumb pipes or moral entities?’ will look at the role of the industry in moderating content. The online safety and filtering debate has gathered pace, as has how to deal with abuse on social media sites. Recent arguments around defamation and media regulation could see online platforms given a bigger role in policing the internet. We will discuss the implications of this for freedom of speech, the law, industry and society, and look at where this debate will be in ten years’ time.
The other two panels ‘Enabling Innovation’ and ‘The Future ISP’ will look at the services being delivered in the future, with content streaming, superfast, FTTH and smarter cities making a big difference already, with speakers from across the industry.
Nicholas Lansman, ISPA Secretary General, said, "2013 has been a very busy year for the internet, with some major announcements asking the industry to do more to moderate content. Therefore the ISPA Conference is the perfect time to take stock and try to analyse where the industry is going and what new innovations and services will be available to customers in the next decade”. Lansman was also happy to confirm the Minister’s involvement saying “with more and more of us dependant on being connected, it’s essential providers and consumers ensure services are safe and secure, and the Security Minister is expected lay out the way government and industry can work together to make this happen”.
