2013 ISPA Awards Launched- The 15th ISPAs!

Registrations for the 2013 ISPA Awards were opened in early December. The 2013 awards are the 15th awards ISPA has run. We’ll be open for registration across 15 categories, including 2 new ones- Best Superfast Broadband and Best Fixed Wireless. Registrations and entries are done with our testing partner thinkbroadband and are open until 25th January 2013.

2012 ISPA Conference

ISPA’s Annual Conference took place on Monday 12th November in the plush surroundings of Hogan Lovells’ London office. The conference saw 4 panels discussing some of the main issues in the UK internet industry today. There were panels on the Draft Communications Data Bill, competing visions for UK broadband strategy, cyber-security and regulating offensive speech online. There was also a speech from DCMS official Simon Towler on the government’s ITU preparations and a vulnerability demonstration.

The Director of Public Prosecutions, Keir Starmer spoke about the new guidelines the CPS are publishing as well as talking the conference through cases such as the Twitter joke trail.  Other speakers included the Earl of Selborne (member of the Lords Communications Committee) and Helen Goodman MP (Shadow Culture Minister).

New members

ISPA welcomes two new members, ARL Mobile, a Herts based mobile developer and LV3, a Hull based ISP.

These two latest members take the number of new ISPA members to 30 this year, making 2012 a good year for the association.

Policy update

November saw some developments across the policy issues ISPA are involved with. Final evidence was taken on the Draft Communications Data Bill and the committee is due to publish a report in the first week of December. The 2nd Reading of the Online Safety Bill occurred in Novemberand the Defamation Bill has reached Committee stage which is due to start on December 17th.

Evidence has also been heard throughout November and into December on rural broadband roll-out and furthermore the European Commission cleared the government to use state funds to help fibre rollout.
